Personalised book gift ideas for every occasion
A personalised children’s book makes a meaningful gift when the story fits the occasion: a theme the child loves, a lesson that matches the moment and a short dedication. It is digital, so nothing needs posting, but start a few days early: the free preview is usually ready in 2–3 minutes, while the full book’s preparation time varies.

Which theme and lesson suit each occasion?
Pick the theme for the child and the lesson for the moment. A dinosaur fan starting school might get a dinosaur adventure about courage; a future big sister, a castle story about a new sibling.
The theme is the world where the adventure happens; the lesson is what the child takes away. Heroica offers six themes and eight lessons, and you can also describe your own.
| Occasion | Theme idea | Lesson idea |
|---|---|---|
| Birthday, 2–4 years | Under the sea or Circus | Friendship |
| Birthday, 5–7 years | Dinosaurs or Castle | Courage |
| Birthday, 8–10 years | Outer space | Perseverance |
| Christmas and the winter holidays | Enchanted forest | Kindness |
| A new sibling | Castle | A new sibling |
| Starting school | Enchanted forest | Friendship or Courage |
| Moving house | Outer space | Courage |
| Recovering from illness or a hospital stay | Under the sea | Perseverance |
| A gift from grandparents or godparents | Something else: a place the family loves | Kindness |
| Goodbye to the dummy or nappies | Dinosaurs | Believing in yourself |
| Celebrating an achievement | Circus | Perseverance |
What kind of personalised book suits a birthday at each age?
At 2–3, a short, repetitive story with familiar animals; at 4–6, a clear adventure with one problem to solve; at 7–10, a longer plot with more text. Heroica writes for ages 2 to 12 and adapts vocabulary and sentence length to the age you enter.
- 2–3 years: short sentences and a gentle lesson such as Friendship or Kindness; 12 pages are plenty.
- 4–6 years: Dinosaurs, Castle or Under the sea, with Courage or Believing in yourself.
- 7–10 years: Outer space or Enchanted forest, with Perseverance or Respecting difference; 18 or 24 pages give the plot room.
Enter the age the child will be on the day, not their current age. Our guide to personalised books by age has more detail.
Which holidays and dates are good for giving a personalised book?
Christmas and birthdays are the classics. In the UK and Ireland, World Book Day (usually the first Thursday in March) and the start of the school year in September also work well, as does 23 April, UNESCO’s World Book and Copyright Day.
| Date | When | Story idea |
|---|---|---|
| Christmas | 25 December | Enchanted forest with the lesson Kindness |
| Birthday | The child’s own day | Their favourite theme, written for their new age |
| World Book Day (UK and Ireland) | Usually the first Thursday in March (4 March in 2027) | A book in which they are the main character |
| World Book and Copyright Day | 23 April | A first “book all about me” for a new reader |
| Start of the school year | September | Courage or Friendship for a new class |
In the US, the holiday season and back-to-school in late summer play the same role.
Which story fits a new sibling, starting school or a hospital stay?
For life changes, the lesson matters most: A new sibling for a baby’s arrival, Courage or Friendship for school or a move, Perseverance for recovery, Believing in yourself for giving up the dummy. The child stays the hero.
- New sibling: Heroica has a lesson called A new sibling. Give the book before the birth; see our guide to new-sibling books.
- Starting school: a story about a new place and a first friend, read in the weeks before.
- Moving house: an exploration theme turns “leaving” into “discovering”. Mention the new bedroom in the dedication.
- Illness or a hospital stay: a calm theme and a lesson about strength. Leave medical details out unless the family wants them.
- Dummy or nappies: Believing in yourself, or describe the milestone under Something else. Keep it light: a celebration, not a lecture.
- An achievement: learning to swim, riding a bike, a first school play. Name it in the dedication.
What should grandparents and godparents check before giving one?
Ask the parents for a clear, front-facing photo and their permission: Heroica asks whoever uploads the photo to confirm they are the parent or guardian or are authorised by them. Agree the theme with the parents, then sign the dedication yourself.
- Ask the parents for the photo rather than saving one from social media.
- Check the free preview with the parents before paying.
- If you live far away, send the family the PDF and read it together on a video call.
How the photo is used and when it is deleted: see child photo safety in AI books.
What should you write in the dedication?
One or two lines only this child could receive: their name, who the book is from and a detail of the moment — the new house, the baby brother, the first length of the pool. Keep it short and save the long letter for a card.
- For Olivia, five today and braver every year. Love, Mum and Dad.
- Alfie, this Christmas the hero of the story is you. With love, Grandma and Grandad.
- Noah: new classroom, new friends, same brave heart.
- For Amelia: a new house, a new bedroom and the same family who loves you.
- Oliver, you were so brave in hospital. This adventure is all yours.
- To my goddaughter Isla: may every page remind you how loved you are. Auntie Sarah.
- Bye-bye dummy, hello big girl! So proud of you, Ruby.
How far in advance should you create a digital book gift?
Start a few days before the occasion. The free preview, with the illustrated cover and first page, is usually ready in 2 to 3 minutes, but the full book’s preparation time varies with the illustrations, so don’t leave it until the night before.
- Create the free preview: no account, no card. Check the face, the name and the tone.
- Pay once for a 12-, 18- or 24-page book; there is no subscription.
- Wait for the full book (online reader, PDF and EPUB), leaving some margin.
There is no postage or delivery window to worry about. Heroica does not offer a printed edition.
How do you wrap a digital book so it feels like a present?
Give it a physical moment: print the cover on a card, add a QR code that opens the book file, or load it on a tablet and read it together on the day. Much of the surprise is the child seeing their own face on the cover.
- Cover card: print the cover from the PDF on thick paper, fold it and write the dedication inside.
- QR code: save the PDF to your own cloud storage and stick a QR code for its share link on the card.
- Tablet with a ribbon: open the book on a tablet before handing it over.
- A matching object: a toy dinosaur or a shell next to the card hints at the story.
Frequently asked questions
Is a personalised book a good present for a child who already has lots of toys?
Often, yes. It adds something toys don’t: a story in which the child is the hero, which can be reread long after the day itself.
How much does a personalised digital book cost?
On Heroica’s English site, a one-off payment of US$17 for 12 pages, US$27 for 18 or US$37 for 24; the preview is free. There is no subscription. An optional narrated animated video (US$97) can be added after buying the book.
Can I order a printed copy?
Not at the moment. Heroica’s books are digital: an online reader plus PDF and EPUB files. An audiobook is not included either, although the site has a narrated sample.
Can I see the book before paying for the gift?
Yes. The free preview shows the illustrated cover and first page with the story text, without an account or a card.
Can I give the book in another language to a bilingual family?
Yes. Heroica writes in English, Brazilian Portuguese, Spanish and French, and each version is written in that language rather than machine-translated from English.
Is a personalised book suitable for a baby under two?
Heroica’s stories are written for children aged 2 to 12. For a younger baby, a sturdy board book is usually the better choice; the personalised story can wait for the second birthday.
